What is Maternity Photography?

Maternity photography is all about capturing the beauty, anticipation, and emotional depth of pregnancy. It blends portraiture with storytelling—documenting a fleeting chapter in a way that feels intimate, powerful, and timeless. Maternity photography is where storytelling begins. I work closely with expecting mothers to create timeless, heartfelt images that celebrate this incredible chapter of life. Whether in-studio or outdoors, my goal is to make you feel comfortable, empowered, and beautifully yourself.

What It Focuses On

At its core, maternity photography highlights the connection between mother and child before birth. It often emphasizes:

  • The shape and form of the baby bump

  • Emotional moments—calm, joy, reflection, excitement

  • The bond between partners or family members

  • A sense of transformation and strength

Common Styles

Maternity sessions can take many creative directions depending on your aesthetic:

  • Lifestyle/Natural: Candid, relaxed images—often shot at home or outdoors using natural light

  • Fine Art: Dramatic lighting, flowing fabrics, and posed compositions for a more editorial feel

  • Minimalist: Clean backgrounds, simple wardrobe, and focus on form and silhouette

  • Boudoir-Inspired: Intimate and empowering, often with soft lighting and elegant posing

  • Themed/Cinematic: Styled shoots with storytelling elements (e.g., goddess, nature, or fashion-inspired concepts)

When to Shoot

The ideal time is typically between 28–36 weeks:

  • The belly is well-defined

  • The parent is still comfortable enough to pose

  • Lower risk of early delivery

Wardrobe & Styling

Wardrobe plays a huge role in shaping the final look:

  • Flowing dresses, fitted gowns, or draped fabrics accentuate the bump

  • Neutral tones or soft pastels are popular for timeless results

  • Accessories like flower crowns, sheer robes, or textured fabrics add depth

  • Some sessions include multiple outfit changes for variety

Locations

  • Studio: Controlled lighting and minimalist or fine art setups

  • Home: Personal and intimate storytelling

  • Outdoor: Beaches, forests, fields, or urban environments for a natural or cinematic vibe

Posing & Direction

  • Gentle curves and angles that highlight the belly

  • Hands placed around the bump to create connection

  • Side profiles and silhouette shots for dramatic effect

  • Movement (walking, fabric flow) to add life to images

Why It Matters

Maternity photography isn’t just about documenting pregnancy—it’s about preserving a powerful life moment. Many people later view these photos as part of their family’s origin story, making them deeply meaningful over time.
